Memorandum Represents a Divide-and-Conquer Power Grab, an Assault on Freedom of Speech, and An Elimination of Accountability

WASHINGTON, D.C.  – People’s Action Institute Executive Director Sulma Arias issued the following statement regarding Donald Trump’s memorandum targeting ActBlue and the organizations that have made use of that fundraising tool.

“We stand in solidarity with the free society organizations who have used the ActBlue fundraising tool to resource their work on behalf of the communities they serve. Nothing happens in a vacuum. The Trump regime is undermining our ability to meet our basic needs – both taking a chainsaw to the essential services that our families rely on and trampling on our freedom of speech and right to due process.

“Americans are being lied to about the reasons for these attacks on our freedoms. Trump and congressional leadership – and the 13 billionaires in executive cabinet posts –want to enrich their billionaire and corporate donors and control our lives. That’s why we are being bullied and threatened with abduction to foreign prisons. That’s why they are shredding the Constitution. That’s why they are making this authoritarian power grab.

“This must be a government by and for the people – one in which all of us are free to criticize abuses of power and one in which We the People call the shots, not a rich and powerful few.”
