The primary function of the Digital Director is to develop, manage, and implement a comprehensive digital communications strategy focused on achieving our organizational mission and our long-term agenda. The Digital Director will also be an essential part of our plan to wage the battle of big ideas, moving our core narratives in the public arena with our target audiences through high-quality digital content.

Responsibilities

As Digital Director, your typical day will include (but isn’t limited to):  

Developing, managing, and implementing a comprehensive digital communications strategy focused on achieving our organizational mission and our long-term agenda

  • Assure alignment of digital activities and content with strategic and narrative guidance
  • Be responsible for growth and execution across our digital platforms through a combination of execution and team delegation
  • Create and resource effective ladders of engagement that grow the number of people who share our worldview and expand the base of people connected to our network affiliates and national network

Creating and curating supporter journeys (petitions, emails, website)

  • Managing list-building paid digital program
  • Working with campaigns on their programs
  • What To Do This Week email program
  • Social media responsibilities (support role, manages multimedia campaigner)
  • Data analysis and reporting monthly

Supervising and Mentoring Direct Reports

  • Provide clear guidance, support, and professional development opportunities
  • Drive the team in fast-paced digital engagement in a news-cycle-relevant way
  • Work with the team to ensure the timely creation and dissemination of content to support campaign goals
  • Ensure strong project management for regular production of multimedia content that makes our vision, or work, and long-term agenda accessible and inviting while also utilizing our distinct visual brand in all multimedia materials

Supporting Communications Cohort 

  • Ensure that our network communicators are supported with template materials and training/advice in implementing their own digital programs. 
  • Monitor cohort Slack for support requests and look for opportunities to share helpful material through this channel. 
  • Attend and contribute to cohort meetings. 
  • Other Duties as Assigned

Location

Can be based in our Chicago, IL, or Washington, D.C. office, but remote locations may be considered anywhere within the continental United States.  We do not pay for relocation expenses.

Travel Requirements

Yes. Travel will be at least six times per year; travel includes (but is not limited to) staff/team retreats

Qualifications

Required

The ideal Digital Director should have the following experience and qualifications: 

  • At least 5 years experience in digital strategy development in a progressive organizing, non-profit, or advocacy environment in a community/grassroots organizing, base-building organization.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in a senior leadership role in a progressive, grassroots, or community organization communications team, directly responsible for managing a high-performing set of direct reports. 
  • Experience leading a fast-paced and effective digital program for a progressive organizing and/or advocacy organization or campaign.
  • Strong experience building a consistent online presence across digital media channels.
  • Strong experience in educating, engaging, and mobilizing key stakeholders on big ideas using creative approaches
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills, including relevant project management experience.
  • Exceptional communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Excellent relationship-building skills with the ability to organize others to move toward a shared vision or goal.
  • Ability to learn and pick up new programs/processes quickly with light training
  • Knowledge of legal constraints of 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) nonprofits.
  • Commitment to social justice and experience with social change organizing.
  • Strong commitment to racial, gender, and economic justice and their intersections, both inside and outside the organization.
  • Ability to work with diverse people and organizations

Preferred

  • Experience with online digital advertising platforms
  • Experience specifically with New Mode and Action Network

Compensation and Benefits

Salary Range

Level F – $97,879 – $133,939 / year

Health Insurance, Dental Insurance, Vision Insurance, Medical, on the first day of employment, and Dependent Care Flex Spending Account after 90 days, 401(k) plan after 30 days, Long-Term Disability Insurance, Life Insurance, 4 floating holidays (Presidents Day, May Day, Indigenous People’s Day, Veterans Day, 10 paid holidays plus the last two weeks of the year that include Christmas Eve/Christmas Day as well as, New Year’s Eve, and you accrue two weeks of vacation your first year of employment.

Hiring Process

Here at People’s Action/Institute, we are committed to providing an equitable and intentional hiring process for all of our candidates. Our process of hiring for full-time and part-time positions consists of three rounds. The first round will be conducted by our HR staff, the second round will be conducted by a hiring committee that includes staff from different parts of the organization or volunteers that have a stake in the position and the hiring manager for the position. Equitable Compensation

We believe in fair compensation for your work - no matter where you live. Our salary scale for full-time and part-time employees is comparable to salaries you would find in Chicago, IL, where our headquarters is based. It is based on your months/years of work experience. While we do not determine education as a factor in whether we hire someone to work for People’s Action Institute, we do factor in any relevant higher education experience that you have. To further counter pay inequities and inequality on the team, we have a non-negotiable compensation practice - this also includes vacation and benefits - and provide opportunities for advancement for full-time employees based on performance evaluation. Your starting pay reflects where you sit within our salary scale and is based on the information that you provide us on your resume. PAI continues to monitor wages through triennial compensation analysis to ensure that we continue to offer our prospective and current employees fair wages.
