WASHINGTON, D.C.–People’s Action Director George Goehl today issued the following statement on the death of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg:
“Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s death is a devastating loss for our country. She was a champion for all of us who are working to build a nation that lives up to its creed. Ginsburg didn’t just break through the glass ceiling–she shattered it, starting her career as a young lawyer fighting for equal treatment in the workplace and ending it as one of the most iconic members of the Supreme Court. A fierce advocate for gender equality and reproductive rights, she inspired generations of women and will be remembered as a feminist hero.
“Ginsburg was ‘the Great Dissenter’. She fought for a government that works for the many and not the few. She stood against the Roberts Court’s assault on civil and reproductive rights and was steadfast in her defense of an inclusive, equitable, and multiracial democracy.
“Ginsburg once said, ‘We have the oldest written constitution still in force in the world, and it starts out with three words: We, the people.’ Tonight, we, the people must prepare to mask up and take to the streets. Donald Trump’s presidency is one of the most colossal failures in leadership in the history of the United States. We cannot allow Trump and his cronies to tarnish Ginsburg’s legacy and destroy our democracy with a last-minute appointment to the Supreme Court.
“Prior to her death, Ruth Bader Ginsburg told her granddaughter that her dying wish was to not be replaced until a new president was inaugurated. We demand that her wish be honored. We must ensure voters have their say before a new justice is considered by the Senate.”
