WASHINGTON, D.C.–People’s Action today released the following statement from Campaigns Director Sondra Youdelman on the Senate’s failure to advance S.1, the For the People Act.

“Today, the same anti-democratic politicians who blocked an investigation into the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol used the same bureaucratic loophole to halt debate of the For the People Act. They don’t want people to vote, and they want to overturn elections when they don’t like the outcome. It’s disgraceful.

“Our freedom to vote is non-negotiable. We will never reach our full potential as a multiracial democracy so long as the Senate rules allow a small group of politicians acting on behalf of the wealthy few to derail protections for voters and elections.

“We appreciate Majority Leader Schumer and the Democratic Caucus for standing together and voting to proceed. Once again, every single Republican senator voted against protecting our elections, and now that we know they plan to block democracy, Democrats need to pass the For the People Act by any means necessary, including eliminating the filibuster.

“This fight is just getting started, and we plan to continue dialing up the pressure on the Senate to act with urgency. Pass the For the People Act now. “
