WASHINGTON – People’s Action, one of the largest organizing networks in the country, is announcing the addition of two powerful leaders to the organization.

Josie Mooney, one of California’s most influential labor leaders, has joined People’s Action as the director of organizing. Adam Kruggel, a 22-year organizing veteran in Indiana, Illinois, Nevada and California, is the new director of strategic initiatives.

Josie Mooney

Mooney is past executive director of SEIU 790 (now local 1021). She was the only woman to serve as president of the San Francisco Labor Council, and was its president for more than a decade. During her tenure, she helped initiate the first labor/neighbor program and negotiated the best living wage ordinance in the country at that time.

She played a key role in unionizing 14 Walmart stores in China with the All China Federation of Trade unions. The campaign was featured in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal and other major media. Mooney was a community organizer for 10 years before she joined the labor movement, building power in low income communities throughout California around economic and racial justice.

Adam Kruggel

Kruggel is dedicated to building power for marginalized communities. Before joining People’s Action, Kruggel was the director of organizing for PICO California, where he helped to build the largest volunteer-led voter engagement program in state history, the Million Voter Project, which was key in passing a series of ballot measures in 2016. Kruggel also helped to lead historic efforts to pass the Racial Identity Profiling Act, and reduce gun violence and dismantle mass incarceration in California.

“Mooney and Kruggel bring a history of winning critical victories for working people,” said George Goehl and LeeAnn Hall, co-directors of People’s Action. “Their experience and leadership is crucial as People’s Action builds the power that will win elections, protect our planet, change our country, and change people’s lives.”

People’s Action was formed last year through the merger of five national organizations, each with decades of organizing history, creating one of the largest, and fastest growing grassroots, people-powered networks in the country. People’s Action is more than a million people across 29 states working for economic, racial, gender and climate justice.
