Today, Republican leadership pulled the plug on the Graham-Cassidy health care repeal proposal, which would have stripped health care from millions, rolled back the Affordable Care Act’s pre-existing condition protections, and gutted Medicaid.

LeeAnn Hall, co-director of People’s Action and member of the steering committee of Health Care for America Now, issued the following statement:

“People’s Action organizations mobilized with incredible speed against Graham-Cassidy in places like Maine, Tennessee, and West Virginia, and they got a hand from their sister organizations in other states. Every time Republican leadership tries to take away our health care, we only get stronger and more effective.”

Grassroots community leaders with our member organizations Maine People’s Alliance and West Virginia Citizen Action Group are also available to comment on today’s events. Here is a sampling of available spokespeople:

  • Jennie Pirkl, Maine, has been the statewide health care organizer working on health care since March 2010. She is the campaign manager for Yes on 2, the campaign to expand Medicaid in Maine.
  • Kim Kramer, West Virginia, has a son with Down’s syndrome, works as a caregiver, and counts on Medicaid for his care and so she can work.
  • Julie Schleier, West Virginia, has rare autoimmune disorder, uses medicines priced in the hundreds of thousands of dollars, and has been covered through the ACA exchange since inception.

People’s Action is a grassroots organizing network with member organizations in 29 states. In the last year, we have held hundreds of rallies and town halls, generated hundreds of thousands of petition signatures, letters, and calls to Congress.
